“Nancy,” George said, “you’re a genius!”
Lizzie looked shyly at Vicki. “Can we still be friends?”
“I don’t know,” Vicki said. “I’m still sort of mad.”
Lizzie’s eyes filled up with tears again. She started to turn away.
“Hey, Lizzie, wait!” Vicki said quickly. “I’m not that mad.” She gave Lizzie a hug.
Brenda came into the room.
“What’s going on?” She rushed over to the group. “What are you guys doing?”
“Oh, nothing, Brenda.” Nancy smiled at the others. “We just solved a mystery.”

The class election was held that afternoon. Mrs. Reynolds passed out slips of paper to all the students. They were all wearing their buttons.
Nancy wrote “Jessie” on her paper. Then she folded it twice.
Mrs. Reynolds asked Molly to collect the ballots. Then Mrs. Reynolds unfolded them and read each name aloud. Peter stood at the chalkboard and kept count. When they finished, it read:
MIKE MINELLI
8
JESSIE SHAPIRO
12
VICKI WOLF
5
“Our new class president is Jessie Shapiro,” Mrs. Reynolds announced. “Congratulations, Jessie,” she said. “Will you come up here?”
Grinning, Jessie stood up and walked to the front of the room. Everybody clapped.
“Way to go, Jessie,” Bess said.
“Thanks, everybody,” Jessie said. “And if it’s okay, I want Mike and Vicki to be my vice presidents.”
Mike and Vicki both waved and nodded.
Jessie’s grin widened. “One more thing,” she said. “I want to make Nancy Drew our official class detective!”
The whole class cheered.

At home that afternoon, Nancy wrote in her special blue notebook.
I finally solved the case of the Funny Face Fight. I learned something about friendship, too. You can make new friends without giving up your old friends. New or old, good friends are the best!
Case closed.
